How a bunch of Reddit memes became the best armor in Runescape
Old School Runescape, the proudly antiquated version of Runescape that still looks and performs like the match I sank countless hours into once I really should have been studying, is obtaining a raid. A fantastic raid requires good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was declared late last year, players were not able to find out exactly what clearing the multi-man challenge could earn them. Jagex reacted with Justicar armor, a brand new best-in-slot armor set (above). There was one small problem: players absolutely hated it.
In factthey hated it so much , for months, the Old School community dogpiled the horn on the 2007scape subreddit and memed it to hell and back. They memed on it so hard that Jagex is currently completely altering the armor's design. And not only that, the artist behind the Justicar armor,"Mod West," is utilizing layouts submitted and voted on by players. Virtually all of Old School Runescape's upgrades go through participant polls, but that is the first time that the suit of armor was forged in a passion of memes. The irony is that while players loathed the'final' armor revealed earlier this season, they loved the prototypes revealed while the raid was declared. Originally, the Justicar armor was bulkier and part of a trio of new armor sets, West informs me, but as the Theatre of Blood moved from obscure concept to real material, the armor changed with it. Players said there was enough DPS equipment but not enough tank equipment, so it was narrowed down to only one armor collection. And if they were just going to use one set, Jagex figured they might also make a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's big poor.
"We believed changing it up a little made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board with the first proposal we shared stream. And , well, Reddit went wild." The memes came out hard and quick. Most demanded a return to the prototype designs. Others believed the new armor did not seem tanky enough and generously provided a few alternatives, with some calling for a more drastic redesign.
It got so bad that a few players started to seriously believe that a meme the upgraded armor was by another artist, and that the artist who made the prototypes had abandoned Jagex. But then something amazing occurred. Even as memes blotted out sunlight, slowly but surely severe suggestions began to glow through. It began with primitive Photoshop jobs, but soon proper illustrations and fan art started to crop up. Players rallied around the idea of a milder, blessed armor set inspired by the Runescape god Saradomin, so they moved back to West's prototype designs and made a few adjustments. Inspired from the memes and inspired by elements of West's designs and other players' suggestions, legend_arts made a hybrid armor layout so good it not only silenced the memes, it got the attention of West himself. You may locate the modifications in the Konar Drop list segment of this article, below. The brand new update added a totally new region to the match, dubbed the Kebos Lowlands. While players have delighted over the numerous changes the new content has brought, like the accession of a Farming Guild and also a New Slayer Master, there has arisen a significant little fuss, particularly from more experienced players, within the new Konar Drop Table. The newest Slayer Master comes with a rewarding drop, providing rare drops such as Snapdragon and Torstol herbs or magical seeds -- items that are otherwise rather difficult to acquire.
